Important Things to Remember for Avoiding Black Mold
Black mold is a type of fungus, known scientifically as Stachybotrys chartarum or Stachybotrys atra or Stachybotris alternans, whose reproductive spores contain a fungal poison or mycotoxin. This substance is taken in by inhalation and causes physical illness related to the mucus membranes of the body. As such, the various organs that have mucus become irritated and periodic dry coughing, sinusitis and difficulty of breathing are some of the manifestations of Stachybotrys poisoning. In particular, the lungs are badly affected by the mycotoxin. This is evidently because it is through the lungs that the substance is taken in and the poisonous spores are trapped there. If the volume of spores taken in and the frequency of intake is high enough, Stachybotrys poisoning can cause hemorrhaging in those organs. In young people, particularly newborn infants, this condition may be fatal.
Very few people realize it but the "war" against black mold starts at the very minute that they have their houses built. One of the danger signals that must constantly be in mind - in brightest red - should warn against: (1) buying property in an area that is flood prone or property that is situated on swampy land. (2) Buying property surrounded by verdant foliage in a habitually humid location. (3) Using logs or timbers that have been taken from an old structure.
Flood prone areas are natural habitats for black mold
Although a vacation house by a lake or river may be a romantic idea, people have to make certain that water does not overflow into the area regularly and that the property they bought is far above the flooding level in the location. Otherwise, the wooden portions of the house are likely to be constantly moist from exposure to water. This condition is very favorable for black mold spores to latch on to the wood and build colonies there. The spores are microscopic. They number in the millions and are easily swept up into the air when the black molds spew them out. They are then carried with the wind and can travel for miles from their source. Every once in a while a number of them will be low enough to be drifted into a house where, if they find moist wood, they will form colonies that will be difficult to eradicate. So if your build your wooden structure low in a flood-prone location, which is moreover close to a wooded place where dead logs and tree stumps are plenteous, you are practically inviting black molds to party in it.
Building close to a forest or wood in a humid place
Even if your wooden house is not close to any body of water, if the climate in the area is humid, the house will need enough ventilation to allow the moisture in it to evaporate into the environment. So it will not be wise for you to fence the house in with too many trees and foliage which will only serve to trap the moisture in your vicinity. This will make the structures in the house moist enough for black molds to grow vigorously.
Beware of the materials that you use for the house
The use of secondhand timber or lumber for your house is an unwise move. The presence of molds in wood cannot be visually determined. That is because, as mentioned, their reproductive cells are infinitesimally minute and can get lodged in the crevices of the wood. Spores can hibernate through dry periods that are precarious for the black mold. They will encrust themselves with tough coats that are resistant to temperature and chemical agents. When conditions are ripe once more for the growth of black mold, they will regenerate and proceed to form colonies. Along this line, the use of cellulose-infiltrated concrete has to be carefully deliberated.
