New breast cancer scanner developed for easy detection
A NEW breast cancer scanner could bring about a revolution in detection of the disease for thousands of women suffering with it. The lunchbox sized kit will let women test themselves at the comfort and privacy of their home in just minutes. The scanners can be fitted over the bra and there is no need to apply liquid gel unlike ultrasound. If there are any tumours they are depicted by a red dot on a screen. The device was invented by Prof Zhipeng Wu at the Manchester University. Wu believes scanners are small enough to fit inside a lunch box and could eventually be used at home to allow women at risk to continuously monitor their own breast health, cutting waiting lists for GP tests. Wu said, "The system is portable and as soon as you lie down you can get a scan - it's real-time. The real-time imaging minimises the chance of missing a breast tumour during scanning. Other systems also need to use a gel, such as in an ultrasound, to work but with our system you don't need that - it can be done simply in oil, milk, water." A university spokesman said, "Not only is this a quicker and less intrusive means of testing, it means women can be tested at GP surgeries, which could reduce waiting times and in some cases avoid unnecessary X-ray mammography." Wu added, "This will benefit millions of women in developed and developing countries bearing in mind one in nine may develop breast cancer." "Although there is still research to be done, the system has great potential to bring a new way for breast cancer diagnosis." Some 45,000 UK women are diagnosed with the disease each year. It claims around 12,000 lives a year.

Microbubbles and Ultrasound $170.47 Microbubbles have been used for several decades as ultrasound contrast agents in diagnostic ultrasound imaging. However, their application in gene therapy as delivery vehicles has only recently been realised. The presence of microbubbles in close proximity to cells during ultrasound insonation can increase the efficacy of drug or gene delivery by inducing sonoporation. In this research project, experimental inhouse microbubbles were used in order to establish the exact parameters that lead to sonoporation. Confocal imaging and 3D reconstruction indicated the structure, morphology and sizedistribution of these membranebound microbodies. Subsequently, cells were grown in an acousticallytransparent parallel membrane environment, where delivery of molecules of various sizes, in the presence of both inhouse and Definity microbubbles was investigated. The acoustic parameters were established for achieving sonoporation with the aid of a clinically relevant scanner in the presence of commercially available Definity microbubbles. Ultrasound for Surgeons $45 In recent years, technology has revolutionized the practice of surgery. As part of this change, surgeon-performed ultrasound has become one of the most integral parts of the surgeon's clinical practice. It is not surprising to observe this current surge of interest in ultrasound by general surgeons because surgeons are highly motivated to provide the best possible care for their patients, including the use of the latest technologic advances in diagnosis and treatment. Furthermore, ultrasound equipment is compact, affordable and user-friendly so that extensive training is not required to master focused ultrasound techniques. |

Obstetric Ultrasound $115.95 This evidence-based book shows how to use ultrasound to identify potential problems and how best to manage them. Working backwards from the fetal finding or maternal problem, this practical resource explores potential diagnostic routes and management plans. Throughout the book, the author uses ‘case in point’ examples to focus on how to extract the most useful information from a standard ultrasound examination. Dr. Hobbins, who has spent more than three decades using ultrasound in a perinatal setting, also thoroughly explores vital issues such as comprehensive examination of the fetal anatomy, the meaning of various abnormal findings, how ultrasound can be used to enhance the management of obstetrical complications, dealing with discrepant biometry, diabetes and hypertension, advanced maternal age, preterm labor, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and safety of ultrasound. |

Ultrasound Imaging $209 Diagnostic and Therapeutic Ultrasound has recently taken an explosive growth for better safer, economic, mobile and high quality healthcare. This technology is very appealing for medical applications because it is non-ionizing, non-invasive and it is available in most of the medical and clinical facilities. Its low cost, when compared with other medical image modalities, makes it one of the preferred tools for medical monitoring, follow-up and diagnosis. Besides the traditional fields of Cardiology and Obstetrics, where it is extensively used for long time, it has became also very useful in the diagnosis of diseases of the prostate, liver and coronaries and carotids atherosclerosis. However, Ultrasound images present poor quality, very low signal to noise ratio and a lot of artifacts. The extraction of useful information from Ultrasound data for diagnosis is a challenge task that makes this medical image modality a very active field of research. The difficulties are being overcome and novel and advanced methods are being proposed for detection, characterization and segmentation of abnormalities in several organs. In fact, Ultrasound application range is vast, covering almost all organs of the human body, including the brain where Tran-cranial Doppler Ultrasound is very important to assess the brain vasculature. This book presents some of the recent advances in Ultrasound imaging technology covering several organs and techniques in a Biomedical Engineering (BME) perspective. The focus of the book is in the algorithms, methodologies and systems developed by multidisciplinary research teams of engineers and physicians for Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) purposes. Cardiovascular and Cancer, the most common life-threatening diseases in western countries, are two of the most important topics focused in the book. However, other advanced issues are also presented such as Intravascular Ultrasound, 3D US and Ultrasound in Computer-Aided Surgery (CAS). Some chapters are direct contributions from medical research groups where Ultrasound has also received great attention in the last decade. By this, new techniques based on Ultrasound were introduced in the clinical practice for diagnosis and therapeutics, mainly in hospital facilities. |
