Stereo Microscope

Stereo microscopes or dissecting microscopes are one in the same instrument – the name is often used interchangeably.  They are used for looking at specimens with a three dimensional view.  In reality stereo microscopes are like having two compound microscopes looking at the focus point of reference at slightly different angles, thus creating a three dimensional image.  The magnification level is much less than that of a standard upright compound microscope.  Magnification for stereo microscopes is usually in the range of .7X to 50X.   However, there are upscale models that will magnify to higher levels up towards 300X with when accessory lenses are added.  The magnification points can be fixed, stepped or zoom depending on the model and the desire of the user.

There are many different stand designs available for stereo microscopes such as the pole stand, rigid arm stand with or without built in illumination.  Boom stands can also be used to get the microscope above and over larger objects for examination, and may have articulated arm stands.

There are many illumination options available for the stereo microscope, including but not limited to fiber optic dual light guides and ring lights, light emitting diodes (LED), coaxial through the lens illumination and fluorescence.

Camera options include large format, 35mm, video and digital systems.  With digital options there is software available that offers a full-featured image capture software suite to easily control all of the camera's advanced settings and have simple but powerful graphic interfaces.  Full-capture solutions are included to provide the user with the ultimate in live image analysis and archival storage.

An example of a stereo microscope is the VanGuard model 1274ZH.  This microscope comes standard with a total magnification range of 7-45X, and can zoom from any point in between the upper and lower magnifications.  It also includes a stand with both upper and lower built in halogen lighting.
