Using Solar Engery To Heat Water - 3 Sure Techniques To Save Money

Whether you are converting your whole home to run on solar power, or simply looking to save some money and help the environment at the same time, you should seriously consider using solar power to heat your water. These system can either completely replace or supplement you existing hot water system.

There are a few of different ways you can use solar power to heat your water. Let's take a look at some of the more common ways of heating water using solar power.

1. The first involves using your existing electric hot water heater, and powering it via your household solar power system. This can work, but hot water heaters draw large amounts of electricity, can leave the rest of your house starving for energy, and can put a strain on your batteries. Most solar power system in most places in the US will have a hard time keeping up with the demands of an electric hot water heater doing all the work on its own.

2. The second method involves piping your water through coils in solar collectors (basically reflective boxes that focus the sun's heat energy onto the water pipes). This method has the advantage of using no electricity on its own, but can take up roof space that could be used to generate more electricity. But the total energy saved is most often worth the slight drop in electrical power generation.

3. Perhaps the most efficient method involves using a somewhat hybrid approach, in which water is heated by passing through the solar collectors, and is piped down and stored in an electric water heater that is run either off of solar power or the existing electrical grid. It takes much less energy to maintain hot water in an insulated container via electricity than it does to heat it entirely with the same electricity.

In all cases, there will be special installations required. Controls for the solar collectors to keep the water from getting too hot, extra water storage tanks for water that is being heated on the roof, and the solar panels and associated electrical systems if also converting to solar electrical power. But with a little time and research invested, you can do most of the installation yourself. An electrician will always be required to do the final connections to the power grid, however. There are several safety devices that must be in place to protect people working on the power lines, and most power companies require certification before they will allow a cunsumer to hook a solar power system into the grid.

While these system can be expensive to set up, they will quickly pay for themselves in saved energy bills. Some states also offer generous tax or cash incentives for home owners willing to go green. Some states will even help pay for the system initially! With all the concern over renewable non-polluting energy sources, there has never been a better time to go solar.
