Diamond Grading - The Gia Clarity Grading System
Richard T.Liddicoat proposed and developed the GIA clarity grading system in 1952. He was the president of GIA at that time. It took lot of effort and dedication to start this new system. He got tremendous support from Lester Bensen, joe Phillips, Robert Crowningshield and Bert Krashes.
The system was developed for assessment of the clarity of the diamonds used in jewelry. While in the progress of development the clarity grading system was called 'diamond grading and evaluation appraisal'. The key aspects of the grading system were - color, clarity and make (quality of the cut, polish and finish).
Even though there were some other grading systems available for diamonds, there was no single system that was used as a standard across traders. Some of the classifications that were used before the formal development of the GIA clarity grading system were terms like Flawless, VVS, VS, SI and I.
But these terms of classifying diamonds were not very accurate and therefore was very arduous to use it practically in the trade.
In the early 1953, after the completion of the GIA clarity grading system, it was formally announced and made public. This initial system had nine grades and these included - Flawless, VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2, I1 and I2. The 'I' stood for Imperfect and was exactly the opposite of the Flawless diamond.
Though this new system of grading had been contributed to the industry, there was the need to popularise it. It required lot of practice and training to incorporated it fully into the trade.
In april 1953, Soon after revealing the GIA clarity grading sytem, the first diamond grading class was started by Liddicoat and Robert Crowningshield. The place of this first distinguished course was New York. With a modest beginning that attracted only about 11 students from Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, GIA clarity grading courses are held in various cities and this learning is disseminated using various teaching methods like distance education, traveling extension classes and probably webex too.
The system developed in 1953 underwent its first change only in 1970 when the IF grade was added to the already present nine grades. This was done because Liddicoat realized that many diamonds were re polished to get the Flawless certificate, compromising on the symmetry and the proportions. (IF grade means Internally Flawless where the diamond can have some blemishes from outside but has to be flawless internally.)
Minor changes have been made to the system since then but the GIA Clarity Grading System was the first attempt to professionalize any kind of diamond clarity grading system. The efforts by Liddicoat and team have led to a more objective classification of the diamonds that are traded today and therefore made the industry more structured.

Grades and Grading Practices $37.95 This second edition of Grades and Grading Practices not only contains updated and refreshed material on the problems caused by our current grading system, it also provides two additional chapters dealing with the present issues on assessment, standards, and social promotion. Designed to assist teachers, instructors, curriculum persons, and administrators who desire to implement cooperative thinking and problem-solving skills into the existing grading practices, this book calls attention to the obstacles that have been created. While poor grades may nudge some students to better performance, there are other students-low achievers-who are demoralized by poor grades, bringing about a variety of behavioral difficulties that have a negative effect on future incentive to learn. Good grades are motivating, but the only students who are motivated are those already getting good grades. Success is fundamental to achievement. Lack of success means lack of achievement. The failing grades are indicative of our failure to provide success for most students who receive them. This book explores the problems caused by grades and offers suggestions to improve the quality of American education. |

Professional Coin Grading Service $103.56 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) is a third party grading service for grading rare coins. It charges a fee for an opinion as to the condition and authenticity of each coin it grades to provide consumers with a rating on which to judge the coin, and encapsulates coins in sealed seethrough plastic holders. Such opinions are not universal and many PCGS coins are broken out of their holders by most major dealers at major coin shows. It was founded in 1986, and is located in Newport Beach, CA. It is a subsidiary of Collectors Universe, Inc. (NASDAQ: CLCT), a company that also operates a rare comic book certification service and a grader of paper money. PCGS claims it was founded in response to perceived inconsistencies in the appraisal of rare coins, however in truth PCGS can have little if any impact on coin appraisals since dealers base their appraisals on supply, demand and their inventory needs and surpluses. Grading Individuals in Group Assignments $124.27 High quality software is produced by high quality developers. But in order to become a high quality developer it is required to have proper training and guidance. The focus of this book is to assess the quality of the individual student and to give personal advice for improvement. In group coding assignments, usually, all students are equally graded based on the quality of the software produced. This method works, but can hardly be called a fair method; it is quite possible for some students to work harder or better than others and this would not be noticed using this method. Likewise, it is possible some students introduce a lot of errors, without even noticing this. This book describes a method to show the amount of work produced by individual students and gives an indication of the quality of their work, based on the project history, in order to make the grading of students more fair and to support students where needed in order to improve their skills. This book should be especially useful to professionals and teachers in the field of software development who whould like to improve the skills of their students by grading them on their own work in group assignments.
