People with type 1 diabetes are recommended to conduct self-monitoring tests for 3 or more times a day.  Pregnant women who are taking insulin are advised to conduct the test 2 times per day.  It is best that one has undergone a glucose training in order to know the proper way to read and interpret the results shown by the glucose meter.  The basic guidelines in using the meter include washing the hands with soap and water or alcohol before using it, pricking the fingertip with a lancet, holding down the finger until droplets of blood appears, inserting the test strip according to specified instructions, and reading the result.

There are some factors that you need to put into account when choosing a meter.  One of these is the portability of the device.  Some meters are ideal to carry around inside your backpack or tote bag.  There are also some models that are small enough to put inside the pocket.  The portability of this device is an important consideration especially if you travel frequently.  With these small medical devices, you can perform glucose tests wherever you may be -- in the office, at school, or when outdoors.

Aside from the size, you also have to determine the testing capacity of the device.  There are meters that can handle 40 tests and there are also others that can last up to 3,000 readings.  The cost is also of prime importance.  The more features the meter has, the higher is its cost of course.
