The Process of Autoclaving
An autoclave works by removing the air from the environment. It heats the material to 134° C. By heating the material, this unit will be able to kill hazardous contaminant. The process is almost the same with what you can find on the process of a pressure cooking. To ensure the sterility and to prevent injury cased by human error, the door of a stand-alone autoclave is locked during operation. You can run the operation several times to ensure the sterility level.
The common purpose of this instrument is to sterilize equipments used on humans and also animals. Usually, the users of this instrument are doctors, veterinarians, and dentists. They use this autoclave sterilizer to sterile the instruments used in medical and also surgical operations. The instruments must be sterilized in order to prevent infections and transmission of virus from one body to another.
Air removal is the first step on the operation of an autoclave. This step removes all the air in the chamber inside the autoclave. The chamber is totally sealed after all the air removed by a vacuum pump or steam pump. Actually, there are several methods of how this instrument removes the air. It is depend on the type and the manufacturer of the autoclave.
You might find different methods in different autoclave sterilizers. After the air removed, the medical instruments are sterilized by the heat inside the chamber. Commonly, the sterilization process can take time from 3 - 18 minutes. The heat is usually set around 121 - 134° Celsius. The heat inside the chamber will kill viruses, bacteria, and other infectious microorganisms. Keep in mind that this sterilizer cannot sterilize plastics because they welt in intense heat.
Arrange your equipments to allow heat completely sterilize the instruments. This should be done if you want the best result of sterilization process.
